Helena, a high school literature teacher, lives with her daughter Lola and her parents in Shkoder, Albania. But political upheaval in the early 90s forces her to take Lola and escape the rioting to America, where she finds herself working as a lowly hotel room service maid and sharing a tiny apartment with other illegal immigrants. That is until she is given the opportunity to get her green card. However, the catch is, she has to move into a local Sufi community and hunt down an escaped communist ruler or else she faces permanent deportation back to unstable Albania. Seeing no other option Helena takes the mission. She becomes trapped working like a slave during the day cleaning mansions and stalking the grounds of the Sufi community at night. To further complicate her chances, people from her past begin to reappear in her life. It all comes to a thrilling and deadly end, during a large wedding ceremony.
